Competing with the City's Tavern

04-Nov-1996

Honorable Mayor & Commissioners,
City of DeLand,
120 S. Florida Ave.,
DeLand, FLA 32720.

Subject: Tavern Advertising

It has come to my attention that within certain of the glass doors of the ‘‘Athens Theater’’ property, are to be found advertisements for a tavern at the Hotel Putnam.

The Athens Theater is controlled by Main Street DeLand, which receives a large portion of its budget from the City of DeLand.

The City of DeLand itself owns a bar, located on the second floor of the old Woolworth’s building. The City owns the building, bar, fixtures, and certain furnishings therein. With the below-market rent, as well as the City’s ownership interest in the physical plant, the City of DeLand has a very real interest in the prosperity of its bar.

It is unfortunate that Main Street DeLand, which has received so much public largesse, should be advertising for competition to our publicly-owned facilities. I hope that the Commission will quietly make its feelings known to Main Street.

Sincerely,

Tanner Andrews
