VCBDC Fails to Bring Jobs

15-Apr-1993

Honorable Mayor and Commissioners,
City of DeLand,
120 S. Florida Ave,.
DeLand, FLA 32720.

Mr. Mayor and Commissioners:

In the coming weeks, the Commission will be considering the budget. Besides essential city services, you may expect funds to be sought for such things as the Volusia County Business Development Corporation (VCBDC).

The Commission should be mindful of cost-effectiveness when they consider requests from various worthy causes. If you will ask each applicant to state the service to be provided for the money, and divide the price by the number of units of service, you may easily judge the effectiveness of a donation request.

Please consider VCBDC and its history. Its only real success was the tax-financed trip to Huntsville, when they went to persuade people from up there to come down and take the good jobs at GE so that they wouldn’t fall to local residents.

This helps to develop business, because the out of town people brought in to take the good jobs will eat lunch in Volusia. There will be an expanded need for people to flip burgers. Such an important job program deserves proper recognition.

If we consider VCBDC on a dollars-per-job basis, counting only good jobs for Volusia residents, the program is a complete flop. If we were to divide the budget in two halves, pay someone one half for the service of burning the other half in a fire, then we would have a better program.

On a dollars-per-job basis, paying someone to burn money is more cost effective than funding VCBDC. Will we have other contribution requests that appear similarly futile?

Sincerely,

Tanner Andrews
